What We Do
Welcome to Lunortyx Haven — our family’s small homestead nestled in the quiet countryside of rural Nova Scotia. Here, we blend a love for nature, compassion and science and creativity into everything we do.
Our days are filled with caring for our Coturnix quail, heritage gamebirds, and other fowl and livestock. We have a special passion for the science of genetics— a passion that is reflected in our breeding programs. This combination of science and compassion for our animals produces beautiful, healthy offspring. Alongside our flocks, we also spend time craft-making and exploring DIY projects.
The Story Behind The Name
The name Lunortyx is a blend:
• Lune, meaning moon, is a reminder of light in the darkest times — steady, gentle, and always there to guide the way. It also ties to Asteria, the starry goddess of Greek mythology, who was associated with the night sky, dreams, and refuge.
• Ortyx is the ancient word for quail. According to myth, Asteria was transformed into a quail as she fled from pursuit, finding safety in that humble form. It’s a story about survival, resilience, and finding shelter when it’s needed most.
Together, Lunortyx reflects both who we are and what we hope to offer — a haven of light and comfort, whether through our birds, our eggs, or the handmade crafts we create.
